I’ve just recently finished reading the Shopaholic novels by Sophie Kinsella and I enjoyed every single page so much I thought I’d write up a little review on the series.
There are 8 books in the series, written by UK Arthur Sophie Kinsella and a film was also released back in 2009 called “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. I quite enjoyed the film personally although the books are much better, as always.
The books (in order):
The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic
Shopaholic Ties The Knot
Shopaholic & Sister
Shopaholic & Baby
Shopaholic to the Stars
Shopaholic to the Rescue
The novels follow the hilarious character, Rebecca ‘Becky’ Brandon (née Bloomwood) who is a financial journalist who is addicted to shopping and cannot control her own finances. She can’t help but spend money on everything and anything that catches her eye and in the process manages to get herself into a lot of debt. The books are based on her adventures, experiences and her life.
The series as a whole is just brilliant! Every page had me laughing and I quickly became addicted to reading them, some of the books I just couldn’t put down at all and finished within a few days. It’s your typical chick-lit book, it’s a light read and it’s not to be taken seriously at all. Becky is constantly getting herself into these situations that, although appear cheesy, are totally funny and her solutions to her problems are so ridiculous it makes it even more funnier. One thing I can’t make my mind up on though is her husband, Luke. Sometimes I really like him and think he’s cute and totally crazy for putting up with Becky and then other times I don’t like him. Also, when Becky’s step-sister was introduced I found her so weird with her frugal ways but then she really grew on me, it’s such a shame you don’t hear more from her as the books go on though. If you’re after a light, chick-lit read this summer then I would highly recommend the Shopaholic novels. If you like Bridget Jones then you’ll definitely like Becky too.
As an author, I really like Sophie Kinsella’s style, so much so that I have purchased a few more of her books and have just started reading one of them and already at a few pages in I’m instantly hooked. I will definitely be making more Sophie Kinsella purchases.
If you like Sophie Kinsella books, tell me which ones, I’d love to hear 🙂
